Refugees and Displaced People Worldwide Reach 117 Million, Says the United Nations
The United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees announced that the number of refugees and displaced people worldwide has reached approximately 117 million, reflecting the persistence of conflicts and crises across multiple regions.
The UN official noted that refugees and displaced people worldwide are facing increasingly complex humanitarian conditions, with more than two-thirds living in protracted displacement situations, placing additional strain on host countries and public services.
Prolonged Crises and Growing Challenges
Ongoing armed conflicts, political instability, economic pressures, and climate change impacts have all contributed to the rising number of refugees and displaced people worldwide in recent years.
He stressed that sustainable solutions require stronger international cooperation and increased financial and humanitarian support for countries bearing the largest hosting burdens.
Call for Greater Global Support
The UN urged greater investment in reconstruction programs, education, and job creation for refugees to ease social and economic pressures while enhancing regional stability.
The organization also called for fair responsibility-sharing among nations to safeguard refugee rights and improve living conditions amid escalating global challenges.
